Dear Students, Parents, and Staff,

I am writing to inform you of the plan and philosophy behind remote learning in MSAD #1 over the next two weeks.  As you all know, things are changing rapidly as the spread of the novel coronavirus continues in our state and nation.

MSAD #1 teachers have been working diligently to prepare learning materials for all of our students over the past two days.  Please understand that our remote learning plan is our teachers’ attempt to do the best we can in an unprecedented situation.  Students benefit from direct instruction and support from the outstanding teachers and educational technicians in our district.  Since we are unable to provide direct instruction at this time, we are hoping to prevent student “learning loss” over the two week period. The focus will be on reviewing content that was taught previously as opposed to introducing new material.   Our academic focus at the Pre-K to Grade 8 level will be on reading, writing, and mathematics.  Our high school academic focus will be on essential information in each course that teachers want our students to know.  We understand that many of our students do not have access to the internet. Our teachers have provided materials for all students that can be completed without access to the internet.  Some teachers have provided an online option for students but those options include an alternative for students without access to the internet. We plan to adapt and adjust our plan as circumstances change and we determine what is working well and what is not.

All district schools will be open on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 from 8:00am to 2:00pm for students and parents to pick up their remote learning plans.  Students are also allowed to remove books and other items from their desks and lockers during that time. We are asking parents and students to pick up their learning plans and other necessary items and exit the building immediately.  Our schools will be open on Thursday, March 19 for those who are unable to make it on Wednesday. If parents are unable to pick up their child’s remote learning plan, please call or email your child’s school to determine a time to pick up their plan.  If remote plans are unable to be picked up by a student or parent, we will make arrangements to have it delivered before the end of the week.

Here are the dates and times our schools will be open for remote learning plan pickup:

I am hopeful that we will begin to resume normalcy in the near future but am concerned with recent Center for Disease Control recommendations which discourage large groups from gathering for the next eight weeks.  MSAD #1 will continue to communicate with our community as circumstances change.

Thank you and good health to all of you.

Sincerely,
