MEMO: COVID Update – February 11, 2022

February 11, 2022

Dear Students, Families, and Staff,

I am writing to provide an update to the MSAD 1 community regarding COVID case counts at each school.  For the most up to date information regarding active cases in our schools, please visit our COVID Dashboard on our website at https://sad1.org/covid-dashboard/

Twenty-eight individuals in MSAD #1 have tested positive for the coronavirus since last week.  Eight individuals affiliated with Zippel Elementary School, seven individuals affiliated with Pine Street Elementary School, six individuals affiliated with Presque Isle Middle School, five individuals affiliated with Mapleton Elementary School, and two individuals associated with Presque Isle High School.  No students were required to quarantine as close contacts.

We continue to see a reduction in cases in our schools over the past few weeks.  The week of January 31 through February 4, we had 39 cases in the district which was a decrease of 5 cases from the previous week.   We have seen 11 fewer cases this week as compared to last week.  Since MSAD 1 requires all students and staff to wear masks at school, students who are considered close contacts of a positive case are not required to quarantine and miss class time.

Approximately 70% of our students and staff are either fully vaccinated or enrolled in pooled testing. Schools that do not have a mask mandate are required to quarantine close contacts of a positive case for five days unless the close contact is enrolled in pooled testing or is fully vaccinated.  An increase in enrollment in pooled testing, along with a continued steady decrease in positive cases in the district, would allow the district to take steps to make masks optional.

Please remember to keep your child home if he or she is not feeling well and reach out to MSAD #1 Health Service Director, Lisa Mckenna at mckennal@sad1.org for additional guidance prior to returning to school.

Sincerely,

Ben Greenlaw

Superintendent
